My little place on the web

About

Windswept at Salt-aire, UT

This is a space where I muse on a number of topics, hobbies and interests, and play around a bit with some web building, and develop some skills. Find a mix of information about our travels, and thoughts on a number of topics of interest. Please check the Blog page regularly, as that's where most of the activity will be!

Why choose so personal a domain name?

As this is a personal space, and I am not marketing anything, nor plan to sell the site, it seemed straight-forward to present me! Instead of trying to create business cards or other identification for all the activity in which I am involved, it struck me as being easier to create a web presence, rather than a wide range of identities. My calling card is simplicity itself, and invites folk to stop by this site to learn more.

Community

Community, in the social sense has been an important part of my life as long as I can remember. Growing up within a church family, and involved as both a participant and as a leader in the Scouting movement framed my early expectations of community. As I entered the workforce, the opportunity to give back to the community through Rotary International became a major focus. I've continued involvement in my church community as I've moved about the country, and joined the Masonic Fraternity along the way.

My interest in creating quality communities led to the participation on Planning Committees in two of the towns where I have lived, and has led to growth opportunities professionally, wherein the development of a Healthy Built Environment team has provided furtherance of my interests in creating quality of life and increased health in our communities.

Skills

Professionally, an Environmental Health Officer / Public Health Inspector, has many opportunities to learn and implement a broad range of knowledge areas affecting human health. However, the years spent building a summer cottage with my father has left me with a skill set, and ability to manage any of a huge variety of projects. Renovating the bathroom at home, managing the complete renovation of two Masonic Lodge Halls, or organizing and delivering conferences to a provincial audience are all projects I've enjoyed.

Computers and their operating systems have held a particular fascination for me. From my first, a Commodore VIC 20, through a variety of PCs with DOS, Windows3.11, OS/2, Linux, Windows XP, and most recently OSX I've learned something from them all. With more information moving to the 'net, I've taken the opportunity to manage a personal web portal, as well as the website of my professional association.

Travel

RV & Travel

Creston is an excellent jumping off point for road adventures. Within a day's drive, one can access the Pacific Coast, the Rocky Mountain parks of both the USA and Canada, major wine growing regions in BC Washington and Oregon. We spend less time in our small RV each year than we would like, but our adventures become longer each year.

Technology

Apple Devices & Technology

My first experience of using an Apple computer was the original Mac, at a summer job, and while interesting, the price of admission was too high for my student income. Not being artistically inclined, the ways I saw folks using Mac's over the years clashed with my straight-laced science sensibilities. However, many years later, while considering purchase of a number of small electronic devices, I found that most of my needs could be met in a single device, and thence ownership of an iPhone 3Gs. I've since gathered a plethora of Apple devices, and enjoy them all. I'll be detailing more of my experiences and adding hints and tips in the blog.
