Favourite Apps - Apple Pay

I've been using Apple Pay as an option to make credit card payments since it first became available in Canada for Visa cards. I had not used any other phone-based payment application previously, so this would be a new experience. To set it up, I needed to create an instance of the card in the Royal Bank Wallet application first, so I completed that step, which allowed easy authentication of the Visa card to Apple Pay. later that day, I had the opportunity to use the payment system while shopping at the local supermarket.

I've been using Tap payments for small payments for some time now. The convenience of Tap and Go makes for a quick transaction and is easy to use. In similar fashion Apple Pay is a great option, but usually only when I have my phone out for other purposes. Some  time ago, I placed all my affinity points collector cards in the Stocard Application which has slimmed my wallet considerably. Any time I use this App to present my affinity card, it is a simple step to simply let the cashier know I wish to pay with Visa, and then tap with my phone, as it is already in my hand.

There have been a few instances where it is not so straight-forward: gas purchases, and restaurant meals. Gasoline purchases at the local Husky station still need the swipe of an affinity card, prior to completing the sale, so it is simpler to remove my credit card from my wallet and use it for payment. Additionally, any transaction requiring specific input by the customer does not work well with Apple Pay. In restaurants, where a tip is added to the charge, a card must first be inserted into the reader before the tip can be added. This is a reasonable protection for the consumer, as the whole of the transaction is completed with the card in the device, and there is less opportunity for unseen fees to be added. It does mean the Apple pay process is not reasonably usable in this instance.

I have also installed the App on my watch, where it can be easily triggered, as long as the phone is in my pocket. I've used this method of payment only in places where I'm not needing a receipt, as it is a fast to use the credit card in my wallet in instances where I would place the receipt in the wallet anyway.

As a means of making secure credit card transactions, for the most part, it just works, however, I can't leave my credit card at home just yet.
