Our Smartphones usually have some form of built-in mapping application, but most need to be connected to the cellular data network to be of much use. For those with limited data plans, or those travelling internationally and not wanting to pay data overages or need to purchase a local data plan, Apps such as Copilot  is a major benefit. CoPilot is a GPS program, developed by ALK Technologies, a developer based in the UK,  which stores the maps on your device, either Smartphone or GPS-equipped Tablet, and allows you to navigate without cellular connectivity. We have used this to great advantage for trips to both the USA and Europe. Simply download the maps covering your destination before departure, and they are available to you immediately.

Copilot has a database of named locations to which you can navigate - hotels, restaurants, museums and other points of interest are catalogued and easily mapped. You can also select any address from your contacts list, and easily find your way there. Guidance is by clear mapping, including lane assistance on major routes, along with voice guidance, and map enlargement as you approach intersections.

Currently free on app stores for iPhone, Android,  and Windows Phone, with in-app purchases for maps and additional features. I purchased the program when it was available only as a rather expensive purchase, but have enjoyed free upgrades to premium features, since that time.

Highly recommended.
