Not so many years ago creating a website required knowledge of HTML, CSS, FTP, PHP and a bunch of other acronyms, and the workings behind them. Today there are tools available to build sites on your computer and upload to a hosting provider, or sen simpler tools which allow you to build websites by dragging elements around on a site to create a web page of reasonable quality. While Hypertext Mark-up Language, Cascading Style Sheets and PHP script coding is a necessary part of complex sites, it is amazing what is being created by folks with a good eye for design, but limited knowledge about computer programming.
In addition to hand coding my professional association website, I've used Concrete5, LiveSite and ZOHO Sites. Depending on the depth of site activity you need, different Content Management Systems are appropriate. Scotty Loveless writes an excellent comparison of two other CMS: Wordpress and Squarespace on his blog. For similar reasons, this site is hosted on ZOHO Sites: spending time on content, rather than site management.
