Wireless Headphones

The earbuds shipped with any of the phones I've owned never fit my ears properly. As such they have routinely been replaced with aftermarket headphones. I'd initially purchased a pair of wired Etymotic hf2 headphones, because of their light weight, and multiple ear tips  which provide excellent noise isolation, however there are occasions where the wire creates a problems, such as dangling loosely, or restricting ease of access to the phone if placed inside clothing. Wireless headphones should address these issues!

As such, I've recently been using a set of Powerbeats2 wireless headphones connected to my phone while out and about walking.  These Bluetooth-connected headphones have many advantages over wired units, but have a number of other things to manage, such as charging, connectivity, and weight. The Powerbeats2 headphones are reasonably light at 24 grams, and include over-the-ear 'earhooks' to transfer most of the weight to one's outer ear. The fitment is adjustable by bending the wire inside the ear, and, as did the Etymotic headphones, the Powerbeats2 came with a variety of ear tips to gain better fit to each individuals ears. I wear glasses, and find I get a better fit by placing and adjusting the earpiece of the headphones first, then adjusting my glasses.  The noise isolation of these headphones are not as effective as the Etymotic hf2 units, but could be with a greater variety of ear tips. Once the best fit of ear tip is chosen, correct adjustment of the ear hooks completes the comfortable fit of the headphones.

The Bluetooth paring was easily set up, and remained paired though powering off both the headphones and my phone. Each time I turn them on, they quickly reconnect and reproduce the audio from the phone. Calls are easily managed from the switch on the headphones, and callers indicate the clarity of sound is reasonable. Charging is quick; 15 minutes on the USB charger nets about an hour of playback. Six hours playback on a charge is commonplace, and the battery indicator is easy to understand: white when charged, solid red when less than 1 hour of playback left, and flashing red when only 15 minutes left. If I've used them any amount, I just put them on the charger across a meal time or overnight. They seem to retain a charge for weeks if unused.

Before using these headphones, I'd heard comments about the sound being skewed toward the bass end of the music register. Either I prefer my music shifted in this direction, or can't notice the difference - I was happy with the sound reproduction of these headphones.

Powerbeats2 headphones are marketed to athletes, and claim to be resistant to moisture and will stay in place through an active workout. I did not test these claims, but found them excellent to wear on walks, or around the house when doing yard work. Range is good if listening to a stationary device such as iPad or laptop, and is also excellent for following instructional video or audiobooks.

These are pricey unit, but well designed, have quality construction, and should provide a quality experience for a lengthy period.

Recommended if you enjoy taking your music with you!
